A team’s gear is one of the first things that gets noticed. So when a team gets fresh gear, it isn’t hard to miss the upgrade. This season, Powell High School’s [PHS] girls and boys basketball teams both got new uniforms. The Lady Panthers were surprised this season with reversible pink and camo uniforms while the Panther boys varsity team got classic uniforms.
The girls got their new uniforms for their pink-out and hero games this season. This came as a complete surprise to the girls. It added an extra element of excitement to the team.
“I thought it was awesome. She [Coach Kistler] kind of just was like, ‘like the orange and pink doesn’t look very good.’ and then walked out of the locker room.” junior girls basketball player Saige Kidd said. “We were like what’s happening? It was just a lot of fun.”
The boys, on the other hand, were involved in the process of picking out their classic uniforms.
“[Coach Heny] asked me a lot of questions about them,” senior boys basketball player Gunnar Erickson said. “It was mostly just all the seniors that kind of tagged along on the style and design.”
When it comes to the cost of the uniforms, it can differ greatly from brand to brand.
“I think they ended up being around $85 per uniform and because of that, we were only able to order 14 sets for this year,” Head Basketball Coach Mr. Mike Heny said. “That’s why just the varsity has them.”
Every few years a different team gets selected to receive new uniforms, funded by the round table. It was not the year for the boy’s and girl’s basketball teams, so the money to buy their new uniforms came from fundraising.
“This year since it wasn’t our turn yet, those funds came from our summer basketball camp that we run,” Mr. Heny said. “The extra money that the kids do for their fundraising activity at the start of the season.”
