Since 1959, the nation’s top musical artists have been recognized for their achievements at the Grammys. However, with so many favorite people competing for the same awards, scandals arise every year. And on February 2, this year’s Grammys were no different.
From iconic outfits to musical upsets, the Grammys were action-packed, and PHS students loved it. It was popular amongst everybody, no matter the format in which they viewed it.
“I watched some of the runway interviews,” junior Janicia Ramirez said. “I loved seeing some of the good outfits.”
However, Ramirez was one of the few students who watched the Grammys live. Most chose to view the show later on social media.
“I didn’t really watch it, but I heard a lot of stuff about it,” sophomore Star Gonzales said. “I saw most of it scrolling through TikTok…”
TikTok played a vital role in spreading information about this year’s awards. People’s opinions were spreading like wildfire. But in Gonzales’s opinion, going viral was essential to winning awards this year.
“A lot of the songs that were chosen this year were a lot of songs that were popular on TikTok,” Gonzales said. “Not songs that were popular; just like sounds that people are using to make videos for fun.”
This kind of song-winning really riled up some fandoms; particularly the fans of alternative pop artist Billie Eilish.
“I was heartbroken and devastated for [Billie Eilish],” Ramirez said. “[‘Hit Me Hard and Soft’] was Billie’s favorite work and she was robbed.”
However, this was not the opinion of everybody. In fact, some students felt the exact opposite.
“I did listen to her album, and I did hear that her album was released early,” Gonzales said. “Some of [the songs] just sound really choppy and rushed. It does sound good, and there’s some really, really nice songs in there, but a lot of it sounds really rushed.”
Another artist was also a source of drama; however, here at PHS, Beyonce was much less loved than Eilish.
“‘Cowboy Carter‘ is not my favorite, and it’s not all too country,” sophomore Cambree Dicks said. “So that just kind of shocked me when I heard that she won Best Country Album because I was kind of just like, that’s not really country.”
Many students also had the same sentiments, saying that “Cowboy Carter” fit better into Beyonce’s classic R&B genre. Others just didn’t like the album.
“I feel like ‘Cowboy Carter’ did not deserve anything,” Ramirez said. “In my personal opinion, I didn’t even know it was an album. I thought she just put out [Texas Hold’em].”
On a different note, PHS students were stunned by the outfits at the Grammys.
“There were a couple outfits that really just stood out to me and I thought were really cute,” Dicks said. “Then there were a couple outfits that I was kind of like, oh, that’s an interesting choice.”
However, certain people at the Grammys decided that a lack of an outfit was the best idea. Namely, Bianca Censori, Kanye West’s significant other.
“There was a little scandal between Kanye and his little wife,” Ramirez said. “That one was wild. Wish I had not seen that.”
Censori came to the Grammys wearing a massive black coat, and underneath that, a transparent dress. She and West only stayed a little while, leaving chaos in their wake.
Despite all of the drama, whether it was about the music or the clothes, this year’s Grammys were one for the books.
“I just saw little bits and pieces of [the Grammys], and some of the things I saw kind of shocked me a little bit,” Dicks said. “So I was kind of like, that was interesting. I feel like that’s a great way to describe it. Very interesting.”
