As spring rolls around, the Powell Student Council hosts the annual Spring Fling dance to raise funds. This year, the dance was a Sadie Hawkins, meaning the girls asked the guys to the dance.
Because this is different from the norm, the council held a contest to see which Sadie Hawkins’s proposal was the best. The winner got a free admission and a gift card.
“[My girlfriend] ended up leaving a bouquet of flowers in my car and a note with a Spring Fling,” senior Landon Smallwood said. “It was super sweet, And I honestly think that might have been the happiest I have ever been.”
Posters are a common occurrence when looking at dance proposals.
“My girlfriend gave me a paper of my favorite game with a punny pickup,” sophomore Derrik Tucker said. “The paper said ‘Will you be the Piper to my Rico for the Spring Fling.’”
When looking at past dances, certain things stand out. From the decorations to the music everyone has their favorite part.
“There was one dance where a teacher bought a Polaroid camera,” Tucker said.“You could take Polaroid pictures which was really cool and a lot of people did that.”
As spring sports start weekends are taken up by soccer games, track meets, and tennis. Finding a good date for the spring fling dance can be difficult.
“I felt like the dance was leaning towards being a flop,” sophomore Emma Bear said. “There were not enough people there to make it fun. I think they should have done it on a better day so more people could make it without interrupting their sports”
The student council hosts several events throughout the year to encourage participation within the community, from dress-up days to dances like homecoming and spring fling these events allow for a sense of community among the students.
“The Spring Fling provides opportunities for all students to have a second semi-formal dance in the spring,” Student Council advisor Kaitlin Loeffeen said. “We open it up to freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, and that aligns with the Student Council’s approach to making sure each class feels that there are equal opportunities.”
Some students see Spring Fling as an underclassmen dance, but it is encouraged for all grades to attend
“I understand it because seniors and juniors get prom,” Smallwood said. “But I think that everybody should be able to have fun at Spring Fling.”
When looking at the attendance of spring fling compared to other dances, you can see a huge difference.
“It’s sad a lot of people don’t come,” Bear said. “It’s still a fun way to make memories throughout your high school years.”
One of the most important parts of a dance is the dresses. Homecoming, prom, and Spring Fling all have individual styles.
“I like the spring colors in the dresses,” Bear said. “The floral patterns are always so cute.”
Although when looking at the dance outfits the dresses aren’t the only aspect of the attire.
“I wore just brighter colors, seeing as how it is Spring Fling,” Smallwood said. “I tried to match with my girlfriend.”
Unlike homecoming and prom being hosted in the commons, the Spring Fling was hosted in the auxiliary gym for a change of scenery.
“This year, we were able to use the Auxiliary gym,” Mrs. Loeffeen said. “I look forward to that smaller space, we can decorate it and have a fun time there.”
