Kids at Powell High School have little variety with haircuts, but the population has a few outliers. Some think dyed hair or different haircuts are ‘distracting’ or ‘dumb’. Others think the opposite; that being different adds variety, and nobody should be ashamed of being different.
“I think there should be more difference because [everyone is] the same,” junior Casey Thormahlen said. “Like… just weirdly cut guy haircuts, or girls that have no special stuff done to their hair, just straight and boring. I think having more people with colors and styles in their hair would make people look a lot more interesting.”
Many students can agree that haircuts here are about the same, with very little differentiation.
“We need to get rid of the ice cream scoop,” junior Crystal Swartout said, referring to fluffy hair with a rounded top and edges that flop outwards. “It’s so ugly.”
Students have strong opinions on haircuts, especially men’s haircuts, giving the haircuts funny names like the “Justin Bieber cut”, the “ice cream scoop,” the “llama,” the “Joe Dirt,” and many more.
“Among the guys, I see a lot of repetitiveness,” junior Levi Hawley says. “And like, while the guys can rock it… it’s like, are there no other styles that look good on you?”
Repetitiveness is common with men’s haircuts in PHS. Many say they’d like to see the guys get different haircuts or to just fan out their options.
“I want to dye my hair, and I like seeing people that have dyed hair,” Casey said. “I just don’t want my hair to die or get over-bleached or something.”
Many girls at PHS dye their hair natural colors, and the struggle with bleach is real. Bleaching can kill your hair and often reacts to hair in many different ways, so people are wary of hair dye because of it.
“Some people will go with their natural hair color, but I know some people could rock different hair colors,” Crystal (who has colors in their hair) said. “[People] should definitely try it out.”
Even if you try out something you’ve never done, you might like it. No matter who you are, there is always something that will look perfect on you, you just have to find out what it is.
“[Hairdye is] a way that you can express yourself; different colors can come together with different outfits to make a person look really cool,” Hawley said. “And not that a person needs hair dye to look cool, but personally, I just find it appealing.”
Not only can hair dye make you stand out, but it can also make outfits match better because of the different colors. Dye can give you a different palette to express yourself other than clothing alone.
Whether it’s different haircuts or different hair dyes, variety is wanted big time at PHS, and many would do whatever they could to avoid seeing the same things every day. Maybe it’s time everyone tries something new.
