Being a senior means it is time to start planning what to do after graduation. This can include looking into colleges and the prices of college, as well as looking into scholarships.

Three PHS seniors, Dexter Opps, Alan Crawford, and Dallin Waite, earned the prestigious merit-based Trustees’ Scholar Award. This scholarship entails full or partially covered tuition and often other expenses such as room and board.

“It is a full-ride scholarship and is decided based on GPA, test scores, essay questions, and interviews,” Opps said. “I found it on the UW site.”

The scholarship has great benefits and amazing opportunities, but it is a lengthy procedure and requires much dedication.

“The Trustees’ Award provides a full-ride scholarship to attend the University of Wyoming,” Crawford said. “To get the award, I went through a month-long application process where I wrote a couple essays and completed an online and an in-person interview. To maintain the scholarship, I have to keep a 3.25 GPA.”

Not only has the scholarship program seen the dedication that these three students have, but so has the staff of PHS.

“I have known all three since their 8th-grade year when they joined the high school robotics club and built a robot on their own,” said robotics coach Joel Hayano. “I have been lucky to be able to have them in a class and coach them in the robotics club for the past 4 years.”

This scholarship has great benefits, but the most important thing this award comes with is the feeling as though you have reached peak academic achievement.

“I was super excited,” Crawford said. “It’s a great opportunity that adds to my choices of colleges to attend for low cost. It’s super gratifying and makes me feel I’ve reached as high as I can in academic achievement in high school.”

Not only does earning the scholarship give a sense of achievement, but it also brings a feeling of happiness.

”I was very happy; I could not imagine a better opportunity,” Opps said. “It is a massive accomplishment.”

Overall, these three students are high achievers and very dedicated, and not only does the Trustees’ Scholar Award program, but also the staff closest to these students.

“All three are involved in the robotics club,” said Hayano. “Both Alan and Dexter played football.  Dexter also does soccer.  All three take upper-level classes and classes at NWC. They have above 4.0 GPAs.  They all have outstanding community service records. This makes them easy choices for the Trustees.”
