Going once.. Going twice… SOLD
More stories from Gracie McLain
When some people think of life after high school, the first thing that comes to mind is going to college for four years.
Granted they will be learning about something that they’re actually passionate about. However, it still means sitting through boring classes for four more years of your life.
For Powell High School senior Colter Klemm, secondary education looks a little different. Klemm came to Powell High School at the start of this school year. He moved here with his mom from Kansas.
Klemm recently spent 10 days in Billings, MT, learning how to auctioneer. Three weeks before he started on Jan. 28, everyone attending was sent drills to practice. Over the course of the 10 days, the men who attended learned about licensing and laws. They also learned about bid calling and the physiological side of auctions.
“School is a lot better when you’re learning about something you like,” Klemm said.
Klemm has a job lined up in South Dakota. However, he will not move until he completes his associate’s degree. By going to the Western College of Auctioneering, he is now able to do his own contract work and estate sales until he finishes the rest of his education.
Although Klemm learned many valuable things, his favorite part was the different people that he met.
“There were guys from all over the country,” Klemm said. “It was way cool hearing their stories.”
Although auctioneering does not run in the Klemm family, it is something Klemm has always wanted to pursue. While many young boys dream of being a policeman or maybe even a fireman, Klemm,he has always dreamt of being an auctioneer. He sometimes even dressed up as one for Halloween.
“I’ve wanted to do it for as long as I can remember,” Klemm said. “Just kinda always been a sale barn rat.”
