On Feb. 5, 2024, Toby Keith, a country legend, left millions of fans with the devastating news of his death. After struggling with stomach cancer for two years, Keith passed on. Through the mourning of his death, many will be reminded of the country star through his inspiring, yet catchy music.

“I am sad that one of the greatest country music artists of all time has passed on,” sophomore Sharae Shoopman said. “But I think his music left a lasting impact on people.”

Throughout his life, Toby Keith recorded a series of songs to fit all moods and types of people. Many are reminded of his greatness when listening to some of their favorite songs from his soundtracks and albums.

“I like a lot of his older stuff,” agriculture teacher Mr. Benjamin Curdy said. “‘How Do You Like Me Now’ is a classic.”

When it comes to the popularity of Toby Keith’s songs, many have enduring impressions on the listeners; however, the best of his songs is a matter of opinion and depends on who you ask and which era of music they enjoy listening to.

“One of my favorite songs of his is, ‘Should’ve Been a Cowboy,’” Shoopman said. “I think a lot of people know it by heart.”

Although Toby Keith will be remembered for his music, people have other moments and memories of the country star.

“I remember him and the feud he had with the Dixie Chicks during the Afghanistan war,” Mr. Curdy said. “They went after each other; the Dixie Chicks were on one side and he was on the other.”

Some knew of his battle with cancer while others didn’t.

“I was surprised when he died,” sophomore Kaitlin Diver said. “But I knew he had cancer, so I wasn’t really that shocked.”

Toby Keith will forever be remembered for his music and his forward personality by his millions of country music fans.

“I think he’ll be remembered for how he made people feel when he would play his music,” Diver said. “He has played some of the greatest songs.”
