Sweater Wednesday: It’s here … so embrace it
The famous sweater Wednesday. Of course you’ve all heard of this but what is the history behind its tradition? We can thank Jordan Brown a former Powell High School student from the class of 2009.
He thought the middle of the week was boring. So he began wearing sweaters on Wednesday and eventually his friends caught on. It turned into a weekly thing and this is how we got sweater Wednesday.
Over the years it has been passed down through the grades.
“My oldest son who was in Jordan’s grade passed it onto my youngest son Marshall, and when he graduated he told Cody Akin he needed to keep the tradition going,” English teacher and Coach Mrs. Tracy McArthur said. “At the beginning of each year we would have to go sweater shopping.”
Spanish teacher Mr. Brandon Preator has kept up the tradition. You’ve probably all seen him not only wearing sweaters but also promoting it.
“You can wear ugly sweaters, you can wear nice sweaters, you can wear Christmas sweaters, you can wear turtlenecks, you can wear V-necks, you can wear hooded sweaters … as long as it’s a sweater” Mr. Preator said. “For it to qualify as a sweater it has to be a sweater.”
For it to be considered a sweater it has to be knitted. People often get this confused with sweatshirts and hoodies. But they don’t meet the criteria of a sweater. However, a knitted sweater with a hood would count.
“It’s all about the material and how the sweaters made,” Mr. Preator said.
He has even come up with sweater Wednesday songs.
(To the tune of “Play That Song”) “Sweater Wednesday, it’s the day that you can wear a sweater, it’s going to make you feel a whole lot better…”
That is just a part of one of his many songs he has made. They are all dedicated towards this one unique day.
Now don’t think that you are forced to wear a sweater on Wednesday.
“It’s a voluntary thing. We live in a democracy. Forcing people to wear sweaters on sweater Wednesday is like forcing teachers to wear slacks on days of the week,” Mr. Preator said.
For those who do take part in it invite your friends and teachers to do so as well. Next Wednesday and every Wednesday for that matter wear a sweater in honor of sweater Wednesday.
But for all those who are dedicated sweater Wednesday participators Mr. Preator would like to thank you for your involvement.

I am a firm advocate for the continued existence of sweater Wednesday. It warms my heart to see something that I was part of become such an integral facet of Powell High School and the lives of those who attend. I encourage all who read this to continue bringing the best and ugliest sweaters to the table on these beautiful hump days. Keep up the good work!

I could NOT have said it better myself! What a great tribute Ms. Paul to one of my favorite days of the week!
