A junior at Powell High School made history as she stepped her pink cleats onto the football field.
Ivy Agee, formerly known for her very successful soccer career, was recruited by Head Football Coach Chase Kistler at the start of the football season. With her great kicking leg, he knew she would make a good addition to the team.
“Her background in soccer helps with just strength in kicking,” Kistler said. “You can tell when someone has a powerful leg, and the pop of the ball just sounds different when they kick a ball, and Ivy has that strong leg. Kicking a football is a bit different that kicking a soccer ball, especially when you are talking about Kickoff.”
Alongside the PHS football coaching staff, is her father, Daniel Agee. He is the head girl’s soccer coach and taught her how to play soccer many years ago. He was excited to see her as the new addition to the varsity football team and is her kicking coach.
“Since I have worked with Ivy for so long, I understand the way that she needs to hear information so that she can use it,” Mr. Agee said. “I believe it helps her adjust from one mechanic to another a little more easily.”
After earning 3A All-State for two years, Ivy truly owes her football skill set to her career in soccer.
“Soccer has improved my skill for football because I already know the basic skill sets for kicking already,” Ivy Agee said. “I know where to kick the ball and how I need to adjust my hips when I’m kicking.”
While her first game kicking was at home, the nerves were on.
“I believe she was very nervous, but it happened pretty quickly, and so I’m not sure how much she really processed it before she was just out there doing it,” Mr. Agee said. “It was probably the best way that it could have happened.”
Even though her first home game kicking didn’t go as she hoped, she was able to recover at the next away game in Worland. She was able to score two extra points and kicked a 26-yard field goal.
“Most of all, I want Ivy to have a fun and successful season; she has been a huge pick-up for us since we did not have a kicker and were really scratching our heads for most of the summer trying to figure that spot out,” Kistler said. “She has gotten better each week with each game; I have seen improvements and she has become really consistent with PAT and I really think her range is only going to increase. I am excited to see how much better she gets over this season. I think she will surprise some people with how much talent she has kicking for us.”
While many think that being the only girl on the team could pose many questions, those on the team seem very excited about her addition.
“It’s a little scary being the only girl,” Ivy Agee said. “The guys have been very welcoming and are fun to be around so it’s been pretty fun.”
With many fans, and friends watching her games, Ivy has a strong base behind her.
“Ivy is a strong competitor and tremendous athlete which makes calm and confident when she takes the field,” Kistler said.
