As the weather cools and the leaves start to change, fall is in the air. One of the staples of the season is Halloween. Everyone celebrates holidays differently, but the core of Halloween is dressing up.
In some media, teenagers are portrayed as thinking dressing in Halloween costumes is immature, but is that really the case?
“It’s honestly their personal choice on if they want to [dress up] or not,” senior Dani McDonald said. “I won’t judge them for deciding not to, but as Regina George said, ‘In girl world, Halloween is the one day a year when a girl can dress’ [up]’ and no girl can say anything else about it .’”
Junior Alex Watts speaks passionately about those who don’t bother dressing up.
“I think it’s lame if classmates aren’t participating,” Watts said. “As the spirit of Halloween is very fun, people need to have more fun.”
Junior Kyra Marrow recalls how she used to celebrate without celebrating the holiday.
“I never wore a Halloween costume,” Morrow said. “My parents would let us go to Walmart after Halloween and get all the discounted outfits and stuff. So I got a superhero outfit, Supergirl.”
In addition to costumes, another highlight of the Halloween season is the candy: handing it out, or just eating it.
“My church does like a trunk or treat.” sophomore Pratt Wambeke said. “I think I’ll hand out candy there.”
Some prefer to spend the holiday with family instead of handing candy out while still enjoying the festivities of the season.
“Instead of going trick or treating myself, I end up taking younger family members around,” said McDonald.
As the night comes to an end, students reap the benefits of their trick or treating, excited to find their favorite candy. Pumpkin spice-flavored goodies are frequently found during Halloween.
“Swedish fish are my favorite candy,” Watts said. ”But I love pumpkin spice it’s one of my favorite parts of the season.”
Whether students celebrate or not, seeing others’ costumes is a highlight of the season. As Halloween gets closer, many are picking out what costume they will wear. The question is, will you be joining them?
