A special week is here that includes fundraising events like the silent auction, the golden toilet that wheels around the high school, the traditional dress-up days, movie night, and games. All of those events – student-led and organized by the Student Council – raise money to help kids with critical illnesses.

Every year, PHS hosts a Make-A-Wish event to raise funds to bring joy to kids with severe illnesses. Make-A-Wish week is overflowing with fun activities as planned by the Student Council.

“A ton of work goes into Make-A-Wish week,” senior student council president Audrey Johnson said. “We start at the very beginning of January, right when we get back to school, separating into committees, and getting planning started.”

Make-A-Wish week wouldn’t be as great without the student council. Our student council is filled with hardworking, amazing students who do their very best to make all activities that happen at PHS, like Make-A-Wish, fun and organized.

“The best part about being in student council is getting to help be in charge of all the events and activities that we do here at Powell High School,” sophomore Gianreye D’Alessandro said.

The events for Make-A-Wish week include the dress-up days starting on Monday with Pajama Day. Tuesday is Celebrity Dress Up, Wednesday is Decades Day, Thursday is Formal/Red Carpet, and Friday is Blue and White, which is Make-A-Wish Day.

“I helped come up with the days, and believe they’re creative and a great way to incorporate our overarching theme of Hollywood,” senior Luci Dees said. “I think these themes will be fun, and I hope people will enjoy them.”

Students host multiple fundraising events during Make-A-Wish week that do a great job of raising money.

“One of our biggest committees is the Silent Auction,” Johnson said. “It takes a lot of manpower and time to get baskets and organize it all, but it also raises a lot of money thanks to participation from the community.”

Just the silent auction alone, PHS raises lots of money. The Student Council for 2025 raised $2,160 for Make-A-Wish during the Silent Auction and raised much more after the entire week was over. This year, PHS is hoping to make much more than previous years.

Make-A-Wish week is a busy week for the Student Council, but once it’s over, they’ll all be relieved and joyful that their wonderful work is being sent to kids so their wishes can come true.

“Once the week comes,” Johnson said. “All the work is worth it when everything ends up running smoothly.”
