Powell High School will soon be experiencing the miracle of life; a unicorn is being “born.”

At the beginning of the year the Mr. Jim Gilman’s art classes created a unicorn. Now, a baby is on the way.

After the amount of attention garnered by the first unicorn, Mr. Gilman and his class felt it was only natural to bring a child into the world. But with this come many expectations for the baby unicorn.

“We expect it to be as cool as the mama unicorn,” senior Maddy Hanks said.

The art class is not dissuaded by these expectations and plan only to raise the bar with the unicorn offspring. It will be attached to the bigger unicorn and different glass will be used to distinguish it. On top of this the baby unicorn is a full body mount opening up a host of possibilities for creativity.

“Right now we’re just putting on the glass on the body and belly, senior Zack Meredith said. “The epoxy on the eyes and ears too.”

Mr. Gilman added that this unicorn must be unique.

“Our biggest goal for the baby unicorn is for it not to look like an added feature,” Gilman said. “It’s important for it to look like a part of the original composition.”

The baby unicorn is still its own mythical beast and some of its features include hooves cast with clay and made from plastic beads and a full body. It requires constant work.

“I’m working on the detail of the eyelids,” said junior Brianna Simmons. “I’ll probably do more detail on the face like the mouth and such by using epoxy and making the wrinkles.”

There is not a set due date for the baby unicorn but its birth can be expected sometime before the end of the year.
