“Run! Run! You’ve got this! You’re almost there!”

These are the words you hear on repeat each time you run a race. And the only words people were looking for and hoping to hear  as they worked towards a PR in their event.

The indoor track team traveled to Gillette for the state championship meet March 2-3. The athletes competed against 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A schools. Many accomplishments were made among those who competed.

“I thought it was a good experience because not many freshmen make it to state,” said freshman Jala Satterwhite, who added she enjoyed indoor track, loves the sport and is excited for the outdoor season.

A total of seven freshmen made it to the state meet this year.

Satterwhite competed in the 55-meter dash and had a new personal best of 8:39 seconds. She also competed in the 200-meter dash with a time of 30:30 seconds. She long jumped f 14 feet, 4.50 inches.

Jozi Simpson competed in the 800-meter run and the 400-meter dash as well. In the 400 meter she ended with a time of 1:16. In the 800 meter she finished with a personal best of 2:59.00.

Elsie Spomer triple- and lon- jumped with a length of 30-02.25 in triple jump and 13-09.00 in long jump.

Joey Hernandez competed in the 3,200-meter run, 1,600-meter run and the 4×800-meter relay. He set a personal record of 11:33.24 in the 3,200. His 800 meter time was 5:16.87.

Lane Franks joined in on the 3200 meter run too. He finished with a time of 12:32.97.

Tyler Pfeiffer ran in the 800 the 4×800 relay. He finished with a time of 2:20.66 in the 800.

Kalen Sapp finished in long jump with a length of 13-10.50

Sophomore Hailee Paul competed in the 800 and 1600 with times of 2:59.24 in the 800 meter and 7:21.20, respectively.

Dylan Cordes, also a sophomore, ran the 400,  800 and 4×800 relay. He ran a personal best in the 400 with a time of 58.28. He finished his 800 in 2:24.

Juniors Colby Warner and Jayden Yates competed as well. Warner tied for 4th place with Cooper Vollmer of Tongue River. He high jumped 6 feet even. Yates ran the 3,200, 1,600, 800 and the 4×800 relay. He and freshman Joey Hernandez were head to head in the 3,200 meter. He finished with a time of 11:33.62. His 800 time was 2:18.18and 1,600 time was 5:12.90.

“I didn’t do indoor last year and I enjoyed this year very much,” Yates said. “Those four events seemed like a lot for someone to do, but I wanted to challenge myself and see what my limits could be. “I will do indoor next year, as I enjoyed doing it. I feel prepared for outdoor, although I may be set back a bit from other things.”

Three PHS seniors compete in a wide variety of events.

Tomoka Hasegowa sprinted the 55-meter dash and set a personal best of 8:13.

JuliaKay O’Neill competed in both the 400 and the 800. She placed 14th in the 400 with a time of 1:04. She took 15th in the 800 in 2:28.

Emily Sweet competed in the 55-meter hurdles and finished with a time 10:41.

The boys 4×800 meter relay was made up entirely of Powell High School boys: Tyler Pfeiffer, Cordes, Yates and Hernandez. They took 13th place with a time of 9:38.87.

The girls team tied for 14th place with Green River High School.

The boys’ team took 12th place.

The athletes are prepared and ready for the outdoor season that begins March 12.
