As Powell High School begins to prepare for state Art Symposium, which will be April 19-21 in Casper, one can’t help but notice the largest exhibit students are taking on tour.

The unicorn exhibit was recently finished with the addition of a baby unicorn to accompany its mother. This particular project was a class favorite to work on.

“I did the base and glass and had fun arguing with [Mr. Jim] Gilman,” senior Kacey Creed said of his many hours spent on the unicorn.

The unicorn was made as a sort of gag exhibit after last year’s competition, and many students jumped at the chance to get in on it.

“I believe Gilman did it to spite all the people at state art who hate taxidermy,” senior Breanna Holdsworth said.

Students who worked on the project enjoyed both how it turned out and the experience and memories they gained.

“It was really fun bringing so many awesome ideas together with other students to make the unicorn,” said senior Kalen Wilkins. “I think it turned out amazing; all the crazy aspects of it came together to create this totally unique piece of artwork.”

The art classes now have trained all their focus on the locomotive now that work on the unicorn has been completed. The train is a scale replica of a Baldwin 4-4-0 and will be positioned in the breakout in front of Mr. Gilman’s room. The train will be going into a tunnel and is surrounded by a fake wilderness created by painted murals, and sculpted rock.

“Messing with the mechanical end of it, like the whistle and such is one of the big reasons it’s still down,” said sophomore Tate Barhaug. “It’ll be done by State Art, as soon as he gets those cables up, that thing’s going up.”
