Powell FFA brings home hardware from state convention

Powell-Shoshone FFA members attend the last session of State Convention

At the state FFA Convention April 18-21 in Cheyenne, the Powell-Shoshone FFA chapters along with chapters across the state competed in many contests, including: ag mechanics, agronomy, farm business management, the greenhand quiz bowl, meats judging, horse judging, livestock judging, parliamentary procedure and poultry judging.

PHS’ ag mechanics team, which was comprised of Tate Barhaug, Kat Bush, Wyatt Decker and Ryley Meyer, placed ninth out of 39 teams. Part of that success was due following directions, one student said.

“Make sure to put the right team number on your sheet,” Meyer said. “So many people forgot to do that and got zeroes on their scores.”

The agronomy team that placed eight out of 36 teams consisted of Rose Graft, William Kremer, Ethan Mann and Wyatt Murray.  Cayle Kremer was the only member of the farm business management team and she placed 11th out of 57 contestants.

Three freshman competed in the greenhand quiz bowl these members were: Graft, Joey Hernandez and Jozi Simpson. They placed 19th out of 26 teams.

“The fact that we competed so well against the schools across the state in all of the events we competed in makes me very proud,” Powell FFA Adviser Mr.  Bryce Meyer said. “The teams were able to maintain practice all year long”

A horse judging team was added to the pool of CDEs that the Powell chapter has. Zoie Gaisford, Aryanna Minemyer, Raelynn Ramsey and Dacean Thomas placed seventh out of 34 teams. In this events teams judge classes of horses ranking them within their class then giving a set of reasons explaining their placings.

The livestock team of Mckennah Buck, Bronson Smith, Logan Mehling and Kaitlyn Decker placed third out of 44 teams .Buck  placed second in her reasons while Logan took fourth. Members judged multiple classes of livestock and gave sets of reasons explaining why they places the classes they way they did.

Kremer, Simpson and Joy Hernandez placed 11th out of the 38 teams in the meats judging contest. In this contest members judging various cuts of meat while ranking them.

The parliamentary procedure team that consisted of Buck, Decker, Alyssa Gould, SImpson, Hernandez and Kady Wells, They tied with the Pine Bluffs FFA chapter for eighth place. In this contest members take a written test and then perform a mock meeting using correct parliamentary procedure.

Colt Nicholson, Joel Perez, Adrian Sinecio and Kenzie Sterns placed ninth out of 27 teams. Members judge multiple classes of chicken and eggs then go on to give reasons explaining why they scored the way they did.

Buck placed in the top 10 for extemporaneous speaking, Simpson placed in the top 10 for creed speaking. Tate Barhaug placed sixth in prepared speaking.

The Powell-Shoshone FFA chapter had four members receive the highest degree the state can bestow on its members. The state degree. This members were Bronson Smith, Kat Bush, Aspen Aguirre and Cayle Kremer.

The chapter officers will be hosting their annual FFA banquet on May 3 at the Park County Fairgrounds.
