October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, is dedicated to raising awareness for breast cancer, the importance of detecting the cancer early and the steps women can take.

According to healthfinder.gov, breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer in women. Of all the women in the United States, breast cancer will affect 1 of 8. If detected early, most women can survive; the earlier breast cancer is caught, the easier the treatment will be.

The most common ways to detect breast cancer at its early stages are self exams and mammograms. Healthfinder.gov reports that doctors recommend that at the age 40-49 women start making yearly appointments for a mammogram, which is a test meant to detect breast cancer in the early stages. Women ages 50-74 are encouraged to get a mammogram every two years.

“It made my mom happier; it kinda just cheered her up knowing that people supported her even if they didn’t know her, ” said Jaclyn Haire, whose mother is in remission after treatment for breast cancer in 2017.

One easy way to raise awareness and show support is by wearing pink during October. Throughout the month of October there is also fundraisers throughout the world to help to find a cure for breast cancer.
