The battle begins as Austin Chandler and Lane Summers began moving their pieces forward during last Tuesday’s Chess Club meeting, both hoping to conquer the other, but neither knowing the other’s game strategy.

In case you haven’t heard, Powell High School has now officially gone “the way of the nerd” and several students have come together to form the PHS ave a chess club.

It was actually founded by senior Austin Chandler.

“I just had to create a constitution and get it approved by Mr. Wormald,” Chandler said.

The club meets every Tuesday after school in Mr. Vin Cappiello’s room (1106). To join you just have to show up. You don’t even have to know how to play because they will teach you how.

“We play chess, and if there are people who don’t know how to play chess, we instruct them on the rules and help teach strategy and such,” Chandler said.

As with every club, fundraising is key. The chess club is looking for donations of or for chess boards. They currently have ads up on the Cody and Powell Classifieds. Any donation would be appreciated.

Every club also needs a an adviser, and this club has the honor of having English teacher Mr. Vin Cappiello.

“[They are] very passionate people, even though they don’t wear shoulder pads or go to the gym every day, they are still just as passionate as athletes are about their sports,” Cappiello said.

Even though Mr. Cappiello doesn’t know a lot about the art of chess, he is ready to learn with them and be a part of their experience.

“I think all of the kids in chess club have all of the right moves,” Cappiello said.

Speaking of kids in chess club, their numbers are slowly dwindling so if you are interested in playing chess…

“… come play!” Chandler said.
