Cherie Haire, mother of current Powell High School students Jaclyn and Joey Haire, went through a double mastectomy Sept. 25 as a result of breast cancer.

The PHS student body showed an incredible amount of support with a “pink-out” for her on that day.

The weekend before the surgery, Jaclyn and Joey asked students to wear a little bit of pink to show they had the Haire family and other breast cancer patients in their thoughts. Through social media, including Facebook and Snapchat, people across Wyoming and even other states showed their love through posts and pictures.

“I started crying when I saw everybody in pink supporting our family,” Jaclyn said. “When in the recovery room I showed my mom a picture of the students in pink and it brought tears to her eyes. She was overwhelmed with the amount of love.”

Students who heard about the Haire family pulled together to help or support in any way they could, whether it came from buying shirts to help with funds or wearing pink socks.

“I think it’s unique to see how everyone came together for a family that they may have not even known,” PHS junior Kayla Streeter said.

Although the Powell community/high school may not have known the Haire family very well, people all pulled together and showed that there will always be support for those who need it.
