The Powell football and volleyball games can be very entertaining to watch, but one thing makes it extraordinary. The PHS Student Section is the heart and soul of the team’s high school fanbase, and, for the last few weeks, the student engagement has left a noticeable mark.
According to Southern Adventist University, school spirit is defined as a driving force that unites students in supportive behavior toward their school. That’s precisely what the student body representatives want to see from PHS.
“It’s important to show our school spirit,” freshman and Student Council member Kate Mainwaring said. “I think that bringing the student section into the spotlight is the best way to do that.”
The most unique part about the student section is that it brings everyone together. An incalculable amount of current and even former PHS students love to be a part of the student section mostly due to the electricity they can bring.
“I think the energy of the student section has been great this year,” senior and fellow Student Council member Abby Eaton said. “It’s probably one of the best ones I have ever experienced.”
This school year, the Student Section Committee looks to take things to the next level. At the PHS Homecoming volleyball and football games, the bleachers were noticeably packed with students.
“I think the student section is honestly just a fun atmosphere to be in,” Eaton said. “It’s a way to feel involved with the sports that people don’t play.”
As the football and volleyball seasons reach their halfway points in their respective regular seasons, winter sports loom in the future. The student section aspires to bring the currently displayed intensity to the PHS boys and girls basketball teams.
“I hope we can just keep the same energy we have right now,” Eaton said. “Keep it going for basketball.”
The student section themes will continue to change, but the proud Panthers of PHS intend to continue to maintain their school spirit in this evident appreciation of the “game.”
