When attending high school, it is a common apprehension to be self-conscious about clothing items. While some are very concerned with brand names or styles, others are not concerned once so ever.

“I enjoy Nike, Billabong, Brandy Melville, and American Eagle,” senior Waycee Harvey said. “I like the style of Nike, and I also really like the quality, but in general I like design.”

What these high school students desire are the many aspects of these clothing brands, not just the pieces of clothing that brands sell.

“I enjoy seeing different clothing brands appear on my social media,” junior Maggie Atkinson said. “Social media gives me a preview of what cute items I might find on their website.”

But at the end of the day, it all comes down to what the students are willing to spend. Many are not willing to make a large purchase for clothing that is not of decent quality.

“Yes, I am willing to spend a lot of money on name-brand clothing,” senior Brock Johnson said. “If I wear it enough then it is worth it. But if it is a skeptical item then I might not buy it.”

While many students pay for their own clothing, now that they have high school jobs, they are not willing to pay for quality clothing. They will often settle for cheaper pieces of a lower quality and overall condition.

“On certain occasions, I will spend a lot of money on clothes,” Harvey said. “I really like to thrift shop because I buy my own clothing.”

Clothing is an integral part of life, many are very picky about the style and fit of their outfits.

“I really like to shop for sweats and shorts… I wear those a lot,” sophomore Caden Nelson said. “But I also really like to shop for hats.”

However, there is a very common stipulation and overbearing anxiety among many high school students about clothing. Many find it nerve-racking to pick out their outfits each day for school. They want to wear flashy, detail-oriented outfits that appeal to others. This oftentimes causes a large array of anxieties for some when entering their school building.

Some students stress over the fact that they have a limited wardrobe, while others worry about being judged by their peers for their fashion choices,” Bartleby Research said. “The problem of students having too much stress has the potential of becoming a serious health problem among high school students.”

While this is a very untalked-about health risk, it doesn’t affect all. Name brands play a much larger impact on the everyday student than one would think.

“I don’t often worry about how others perceive my clothing, I dress for myself,” Atkinson said.  “But I can see how some may become self-conscious about that.”

While not all feel this way about name-brand clothing it is frequently a large worry. However, name-brand clothing is commonly popular among young adults.
