PHS already has a record-breaking outlook only a month into the track season. Literally. Within the first few meets, the track athletes have broken two of the previous school records. Making this season outlined for greatness.
With the records broken, the athletes must find new goals to strive for. Kinley Cooley, a junior distance runner who broke the mile time record, hopes to keep up her progress and get faster times.
“I really want to run faster times,” Cooley said. “It will help me enter the collegiate sports world.”
While the track and field team is getting better, so is their competition. The athletes have to work harder to stay on top of the game.
“Competition this year is definitely tough,” sophomore shot and discus thrower Gabriel Weimer said. “It’s always fun to compete against good teams though.”
The head coach, science teacher Scott Smith, has a hopeful outlook this season. Both the track and field teams look really good in the upcoming season and competition.
“Both teams are definitely going to be in the trophy hunt,” Smith said. “They have a shot at defending their state championship.”
While the team already looks outstanding, PHS competitors always have something to improve on. Both the athletes and coaches feel like they could improve on the basics.
“We need to get better in everything,” Smith said. “Better conditioning and better technique mostly.”
Overall, the track and field teams look forward to a bright and victorious future.
