Josie Werner is a PHS senior with a heavy background in ag, especially in the equine department. Josie is a dedicated FFA member, and it shows: in her junior year, she earned her FFA State Degree, was declared as Chapter Sweetheart, and was recognized as Powell-Shoshone’s Star Farmer. Josie detailed her success in an interview.
Q: What do you think defines the FFA Member of the Month?
A: I think that the member of the month is basically like, picked over someone who…does the work that is required, but…also does the extra work above that.
Q: How do you feel about being declared the member of the month?
A: I’m so excited.. I think it’s a really cool opportunity, and I’m really glad that the FFA [and the PHS Prowl] is starting to do that now.
Q: Why did you join FFA in the first place?
A: I grew up on a ranch, and so I kind of really have always been into agriculture and everything like that. And FFA, the people in the community of FFA, are really awesome people, and they kind of help you grow instead of holding you back. And it’s just a very motivational place to be in.
Q: What Career Development Events, Leadership Development Events, or other events have you been involved in?
A: I actually did vet science for a little bit, but I’ve kind of been just focusing on horse judging, because I mainly deal with horses outside of FFA. So I kind of just stick to that.

Q: What is your favorite FFA Memory?
A: My favorite FFA memory is probably during the last year [at] State FFA, and just like being able to go on all the tours and everything like that, and being able to, like, compete at state…the environment of State FFA is just one of my favorite things.
Q: What do you hope to accomplish by the end of your time in FFA?
A: I want to accomplish… being able to be successful in FFA, and… put it into my career, and being able to… talk about FFA even after I’m out of high school.
Q: Do you plan on pursuing a career in agriculture, if so? What and why?
A: I do plan on pursuing a career in agriculture. I’m planning on going into training barrel horses and equine science, and I kind of want to … be certified in equine massage therapy as well. So I’m definitely going to go with more of the horse route and training horses.
