It’s an important week for the Powell High School Student Council. This week commences the voting process for new student council representatives. Juniors Ryah Easum and Sawyer Wormald are two candidates running for student council president.
Both these contenders are eager to campaign their bright ideas for an even brighter future at Powell High School. It appears to be a close battle between these two studious students.
“I plan to implement monthly newsletters and more fluid communication,” junior Ryah Easum said. “I feel like sometimes our events fly under the student body’s radar, and people seem to lose track of events, so when adding the newsletters and pushing for better communication, it will help to stop this from happening.”
Ryah has been planning on running for this position for quite a while, allowing her to plan her campaign and know her campaign values prior to voting.
“My morals for campaigning are inclusion, which is a huge part of my everyday life,” Easum said. “I want to make sure all students feel like they are welcomed at events and that there is always someone who knows their name there. Then dedication, over my two years in the student council, I have only not attended about five events.”
Easum has also been a very dedicated and reliable source for inclusion and information for many students at Powell High School. She plays a very active role in many dress-up and activity days here at PHS.
Wormald has also been working extremely hard to push his intentions through and gain more support for his campaign, and having family members run for this position in the past influenced him.
“This position personally means a lot to me,” Wormald said. “Both of my siblings were in student council, but never won student council president or vice president. Having the opportunity to run for it is awesome.”
For Sawyer, running for this position is very personal and meaningful for him, as is serving as an advocate to bring the student body together.
Wormald and Easum have very similar morals. They both hope to push inclusion and participation for everybody. This similarity only makes voting at PHS even closer.
Both Easum and Wormald are excited to see where this goes, and no matter what the outcome is, they are both grateful for the opportunity to show Powell High School their ideas to make the future brighter.
