Our society has become increasingly advanced in technology, and as a result of this, humans have become dependent upon it. To house online data, large facilities have been built for this purpose alone. Many wonder what these immense data centers have in store for both the environment and human health. Imagine a power outage, water shortage, or land/air pollution in your neighborhood. These are all things that can, and have been induced by modern databases. During my research on this topic, I’ve subsequently drawn one conclusion: facilities are extremely harmful to the environment and human health.Â
It’s important to observe the cost of building and maintaining a facility. As you can imagine, it is extremely expensive to install and manage a database. Additionally, the accuracy of responses from chatbots and online searches is disappointing, but we must acknowledge that analysts are continually working to improve their systems’ algorithms. Although these are important aspects in accordance with this issue, the three major environmental impacts are land, energy, and water usage.
For a company to construct a database, a large amount of land is required because of the computer and hardware components. Urbanized areas have little room for additions, and subsequently, they utilize rural lands. Since facilities consume a vast amount of power, they have to be in close proximity to a city. This leads me to my next point: facilities need an abundance of electricity to run.
The energy usage put toward running and operating these databases is exceedingly high. You might be surprised by the energy needed to generate one search or prompt. The energy needed to run these facilities could instead be used to power millions of homes.
As we all know, water is necessary for survival; the amount of water that centers utilize is continuing to climb. The main reason for this is the overrunning of computers. They become hot and need a way to cool off; most companies choose to install a water cooling system. Although centers can circulate the same water, it can negatively affect the environment and alter human activities if there’s a drought. Depending on the shortage of water, a facility might have to shut down temporarily. A great way to fully optimize these processes would be to build databases in close proximity to the ocean, which would accordingly operate on seawater.Â
Additionally, it’s important to note that humans rely heavily upon digital devices; overuse is what ultimately prompts corporations to build more facilities.Â
This research has shed light on the facts of data centers and the impacts the data industry has on the environment and human health. To be our healthiest, it’s important to acknowledge that whenever we use an online platform, we are reducing the things we need and love most: land, energy, and water. The building of these would create a better economy, but all around, they disturb the communities in which they are located.Â
