Powell High School’s FFA Vet Science and Poultry teams competed in Torrington in March 19. The adviser said these teams worked hard to show what they had been practicing for the past couple of months.

“Overall the kids did really well considering the struggles we have had with having a head coach for either of those activities,” Powell Shoshone FFA Ag adviser Mr. Bryce Meyer said. “I think the part that I appreciate the most is the initiative the members of those teams take to study on their own and actually learn the materials so that they can be competitive.”

For the Poultry team Torrington was a practice competition. This team consisted of Colt Nicholson, Joel Perez, Adrian Sinecio and Mackenzie Stearns. Having practice competitions are important.

“It helps [us] learn the contest and what things we need to work on before state,” Nicholson said.

The Poultry team placed 7th overall. Individually the team’s ranks were, Stearns 21st, Sinecio 22nd, Nicholson 27th and Perez 28th.

“We did OK; we had places to improve,” Nicholson said.

Practice competitions are essential for FFA members to get a feel for state convention, which will be April 16-20 in Cheyenne and Laramie .

“Definitely important because it prepares us to know what it is that we’ll see at the state level,” Mr. Meyer said. “It gives us the opportunity to see the live animals actually participate in the competition whether it be meats or poultry.”

For vet science this was their state. The team consisted of Gracie McLain, Alyssa Gould and Isabella Wambeke. The vet science team will be anxiously awaiting their results as they do not receive them until after state convention in April.
