Members of the 2017-18 Cheer Squad lift Addie MIller during practice for the state competition earlier this year.

After the nail-biting, week long process of cheer tryouts concluded, 24 girls were named to the team for the 2018-19 seasons.

“I’m excited; I hope the girls are excited,” Activities Secretary and Cheer Coach Mrs. Vicki Walsh said.

Not only did 36 girls try out, but 36 girls with loads of talent tried out.

“There was a lot of talent; it was a very hard, very hard decision,” Mrs. Walsh said. “The girls just did a phenomenal job.”

She added that all the girls who tried out, regardless if they made the team, deserve huge  round of applause.

“Even the ones that didn’t make the team did a really, really good job,” Mrs. Walsh said. “I’m proud of all of them because it’s not an easy thing to come out there.”

This has been the biggest cheer squad Mrs. Walsh has had at Powell High School.

“I have never had a team this big,” Mrs. Walsh said. “It will be interesting to see how we put it all together and how we make it look for games and things like that.”

This year’s cheerleaders will also experiment with new things.

“We will definitely have more stunts that we can do and it will be a bigger squad for competition,” Mrs. Walsh said. “There’s just a lot more that you can do with a larger squad.”

The cheerleaders will be busy this next season, putting together different routines and cheers.

“I am really excited that the team is so big,” sophomore Taeli Hessenthaler said. “We will be able to do more stunts and a half time show maybe.”
