The Powell High School track and field team competed in their first meet of the season March 23 in Cody, with the Panthers taking second and the Lady Panthers placing third.
Panthers
Senior Colby Warner placed first in the high jump, clearing 6-foot-4, beating Burlington’s Dontae Garza on a miss. Warner also pre-qualified for the state meet.
In the pole vault, junior Brody Karhu took first, while sophomore Riley Bennett took fifth, senior Kaelan Groves sixth and senior Reece Hackenberg seventh.
Karhu earned a new PR (personal record) with a vault of 13 feet, 7 inches, pre-qualifying for the state meet.
“I think what helped me is I’ve been working on my execution on my top end when i am close to the bar I can get extra feet off of that,” Karhu said. “I need to continue to work on the strength and stamina of my legs to get better times in my races and keep getting on a bigger longer pole.”
Dylan Preator took third in the triple jump with a jump of 41 feet, just missing pre-qualification for the state meet. Senior Dalton Woodward took fifth in the triple jump with a jump of 40 feet and 2.25 inches.
The Panther boys 4×400 team placed first with a time of 3:37.46, not quite making the pre-qualifying time for the state meet. The team is composed of Joe Rogers, Jaymison Cox, Preator and Karhu.
Cox took first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.56 and Cole Franks took third with a time of 55.13.
Groves took ninth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.92 while Karhu took seventh in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.64.
Senior Jayden Yates finished second in the 3,200-meter race with a time of 11:21.47 and fifth in the 1,600 meters with a time of 4:47.98.
For the throwers, junior Ryan Good pre-qualified in both the discus and the shot put with a throw of 145 feet, 6 inches in the discus and a throw of 49 feet, 5inches for the shot put. Good took first in the discus and second in the shot put.
Lady Panthers:
Junior Sabrina Shoopman took first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.16, and second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 49.54. Shoopman just missed pre-qualifying times in both events.
Freshman Jenna Hillman made her debut at her first high school track meet finishing second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:03.21 and third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.41, barely missing pre-qualifying for state.
Hillman also ran in the 200-meter dash but there was a glitch in the timing system so there is no official time or placing determined yet for that race.
“I really enjoyed competing in my first track meet because I got to compete against people I have never ran against before,” Hillman said. “A lot of them were upperclassmen who had really good times so it was really cool to get to run with them.”
Sophomore Maddi Hackenberg placed fourth in the pole vault with a vault of 8 feet. Senior Jazlyn Haney took fourth in the triple jump with a jump of 31 feet and 2.75 inches. Junior Kaitlyn Decker placed eighth in the long jump with a jump of 13 feet and 9.75 inches.
Sophomore Hailee Hyde took sixth in the high jump with a jump of 4 feet, 6 inches, while senior Gabri Lundberg took seventh, also at 4-feet, 6.
For the throwers, senior Rachel Bonander took fourth in the discus with a throw of 95 feet, 4 inches and also finished fifth in the shot put with a throw of 33-5. Sophomore Cassidy Miner took second in the shot put with a throw of 36 feet-9.5.
The Panther and Lady Panther dual against Cody was scheduled for March 28 but was postponed due to inclement weather. It was contested Monday, April 1.
