AI has had a huge impact in the world and has been used with increasing frequency. Whether looking for answers, help, or even just to help brainstorm some ideas when lost, it’s a quick and easy fix.
Recently, at Powell High School, more students and teachers have been using AI, and students have said they were accused of using AI on their work, affecting how they write.
“Yeah, this year, teachers have been using AI to check the work we do,” junior Noelle Leighton said. “Sometimes I have to dumb it down so I don’t get accused of something I know I didn’t do.”
Some students think that AI is no big deal and that it’s just another trend that will pass by, but others feel the opposite, thinking about future impacts.
“I think that AI will have a massive impact on education in the future,” junior Caydee Eden said. “I know a lot of people already who rely on it for almost every assignment that they do, and even teachers have started relying on it a lot. I think eventually it will take over a lot of teachers’ jobs.”
PHS students also claim that AI will lead the next generations to academically decrease if it’s constantly utulized.
“I think people are too reliant on AI, and it’s scary for me to think about because I think that we are giving AI more power than we know,” junior Ava Gilliatt said. “I think this will lead to generations becoming academically slower.”
AI has also made teachers at PHS lives harder. Not only do they have to check for illicit AI use among students, but, in an ironic twist, they are also trained and encouraged to supplement student learning using AI. So, they’ve had to think outside the box when it comes to student work.
“I am able to create things like rubrics very easily,” science teacher Lenita Moore said. “But it has made my life harder because now I have to make lessons with students using AI in my mind.”
Even though some students are against AI, they sense it could be considered cheating or even plagiarism. Others say it helps them out.
“Personally, I like to use AI most of the time,” junior Adriana Torres said. “It helps me improve my writing, and I’ve seen major improvement.”
Even teachers are worried for the education of students due to the amount of AI being used.
“I want students to be able to learn,” Mrs. Moore said. “And if they are able to just use AI on an assignment, then there isn’t any learning of content.”
AI brings benefits and challenges to both teachers and students at PHS. It has personalized learning and eases the amount of work teachers have to do. So, although AI has been helpful to both teachers and students, it has limited the amount of learning students are really getting.
