With January soon coming to an end, many keep asking the same question. Where is all the snow? Wyoming is almost infamous for having loads of snow and rough winters, so where has that been this year?
Prior to the first winter weather coming through Powell this past weekend, some people were starting to wonder if we’d get any at all. Even with the first glance of what might come, people are disappointed in the showing we got.
“It’s not good,” senior Dominic Bieber said. “Most people love the warmer weather, but it’s not even warm. It’s just cold wind with no snow.”
Many expected more than what we got in one of our first winter showings, feeling displeased with the gloomy and windy weather we had this past weekend.
“I personally don’t dislike the weather,” junior Oscar Meza said. “I think it’s fine, but one thing I do dislike is the wind. I really enjoy winter when there’s snow, so the fact that there hasn’t been any is really annoying.”
Another concern people have with this delayed winter is its interference with winter activities, and maybe even conflicting with spring sports.
“Antelope Butte has such little snow, and it makes the snowboarding feel so icy and painful,” Bieber said. “Late winter sucks, I just don’t want it to bleed into the baseball season.”
While many people believe this winter has been odd compared to others, some think it’s not much of a difference and that it will just lead to a longer winter.
“I feel like we always get some sort of late winter, so I don’t think much of it,” Meza said. “I think the late winter will definitely cause it to end late in the year.”
Having snowy and icy roads could make it hard for teens to drive to places they might need to go. This especially affects those in our small communities, where residents have to drive 30 minutes to Cody for most things.
“The weather is sucky,” senior Decker Engesser said. “ Working in Cody makes it harder to travel for my job.”
Even though people have negative opinions about the winter weather, they also had some good things to say about the topic, and gave us the pros of this year’s winter weather.
“I think it definitely makes it safer for teens,” senior Cael Kysar said. “Especially because teens are more common to get into accidents than adults, especially if the roads are in bad condition.”
Some people wonder why winter is out of order this year, but don’t have any answers, and they’re just waiting for it to end.
“I could not tell you why we’re having this weather,” Engesser said. “All I know is it sucks.”
With many still feeling the cold weather and the effects of icy and wet roads, it’s safe to say it’s been a very bland winter in Powell.
“The snow has been very underwhelming for the history of Powell,” Kysar said. “And it has been very surprising as well.
