The end of the semester is just around the corner: freshmen are preparing for sophomore year, sophomores are selecting classes to begin planning for their futures, juniors are gearing up for college, and seniors are deciding their next steps after graduation.

Usually, the next steps after high school include attending college for a career, serving in the military, finding a job that doesn’t require college or starting a business. A number of PHS seniors have already planned out what they want to do after high school.

“I will be attending Black Hills State University on an athletic scholarship for track and field,” senior Caden Nelson said. “Then, while I’m participating in track over there, I will be studying towards my bachelor’s in business. Then, with that, hopefully I can land a financial advisor job of some sort.”

Many senior athletes are joining college sports teams, bringing their high school abilities to the next level. Another senior athlete will be heading to the same college as Nelson, but for a different reason.

“I am going to Black Hills State,” senior Ivy Agee said. “I got an athletic scholarship for soccer and then some additional academic ones, and I am planning on taking their pre-med program.”

Next-level sports are going to be challenging, but by putting their hearts and souls into this, student-athletes will achieve great things.

“I am going to the University of Nebraska Kearney,” senior Kaitlin Diver said. “I will be a student-athlete there because I will be on the swim team, and I also got an athletic scholarship. I am looking forward to studying radiologic technology so that I can become an X-ray technician someday. I am so excited to go to college and see what the next chapter of my life holds.”

The next chapter will be thrilling for all of the seniors heading to college for sports and for their future careers.

“I am planning to go to LCCC in Cheyenne for the Physical Therapy Assistant program,” senior Patricia Christensen said. “The only reason I chose this college is because it is the only school that offers this program in Wyoming. I am excited to experience being constantly surrounded by people my own age, not just during the school day.”

Oftentimes, going to college completely depends on what preferences students have. That’s what is so amazing about college. Not only do students get to find themselves, but they also get to find their passions in life.

“It really came down to what would be the best fit to help me or succeed in my baseball career,” senior Dominik Bieber said. “I chose this college based on the coaches and not the actual college itself.”

Being able to expand your knowledge and focus on specific skills is something that is very important. Everyone needs to focus and deeply think on what they want for their future. College is one of the most important milestones; the education students receive in college will follow them for the rest of their lives.

“I’m going to go to Grand Canyon University in Arizona, and I’m going there to double major in forensic psychology and criminal justice with a focus in pre-law, with the hope that I can go to law school afterwards,” senior Kyra Morrow said. “I’m going to be doing the speech and debate team, so I’m going to get a scholarship for that, and then I also got their merit scholarship and their housing scholarship.”
