REACHING OUT
Speech and Debate students read to preschoolers
Twelve students from the Powell High School’s speech and debate team read children’s stories to preschoolers on Oct. 26.
These students were given the opportunity to memorize a children’s story or nursery rhyme. They retold the stories through a puppet to the preschoolers at the Student Support Building.
“Parents were excited,” Michelle Bills, head coach of the team, said. “The preschool student’s parents were there. They watched the kids perform as well. It was a great first performance for speech and debate,”
The twelve students included: Augusta Larsen, Bailey Moore, Olivia Lobingier, Addi Moretti, Luke Matheson, Grant Dillivan, Nic Fulton, Shaelynn Theriault, Courtney Childers, Catherine Wilson, Sadie Wenzel and Anna Atkinson.
“The kids were engaged;our forensic kids were practicing getting in front of people,” Bills said. “It seemed like we mostly had freshmen, but we did have a couple upperclassmen as well.”
A major benefit these high-schoolers gained from this experience is one hour of community service.
“This is definitely something we will do again,” Bills said. “The preschool teacher asked us to come again next year. The preschool just down the road asked us to come there, too.”
The speech and debate team kicks off their season with their first novice meet in Riverton on Nov. 10-11.
