As October comes and goes; one thing stays the same: Parent-Teacher conferences. Parent-Teacher conferences are an annual event every year, in kindergarten through 12th grade, and Powell High School teachers welcome parents to conferences on October 6-7, 2025.
Parent-Teacher conferences are a great time for parents to get involved and check in on their children’s success. Many parents use this time as an opportunity to get to know their children’s teachers and mentors.
“I think they’re [the conferences] really important,” junior Ava Gillatt said. “Really good for the parents and children to get to know what’s going on.”
Many teachers think it’s important for students’ parents to go. It’s a way to get parents more familiar with their children’s school lives and classes.
“It’s a good opportunity to see and visit with parents face to face,” Spanish teacher Mr. Brandon Preator said. “I don’t always get to see the parents I need to see, but it is still good to check in with any of the parents and talk about how amazing their kids are.”
Many parents come and visit all of the teachers just to get familiar with them. This is a key factor why many parents attend these conferences. Sometimes, these meetings make students nervous, depending on their in-class productivity and behavior.
“I don’t really get nervous [about Parent-Teacher conferences],” Gillatt said. “I don’t really think about them.”
Since they come and go fast, students don’t really remember when Parent-Teacher conferences are. And because of the open house at the beginning of the year, conference times were cut back, taking some pressure off the teachers.
“This year, parent-teacher conferences were only 2 hours each night,” Preator said. “We did the open house earlier in the year, and I loved that.”
Although some people like parent-teacher conferences and the outcome of it, others find it pointless.
“They’re dumb,” junior Oscar Meza Jaquez said. “Parents can just check Canvas.”
Parents have access to their child’s grades on Canvas, so sometimes Parent-Teacher Conferences aren’t necessary.
“There are better things they could be doing,” Meza Jaquez said. “Then, sitting around talking.”
While some students don’t find this event very helpful or effective, conferences give their parents insight into their child’s school life. Teachers enjoy this time to give good feedback and observation to those parents who attend.
