Powell High School wrestlers perform log carries during Seal Day.

Powell High School wrestlers recently endured another year of Seal Day.

This annual event is a practice full of intense conditioning and workouts. Unlike any other regular practice, this day consists of many vigorous drills that are special and unique to Seal Day, which happens once a year for the PHS wrestlers.

Unique to PHS, this is a brand new experience for those coming into the PHS wrestling program for the first time.

“It’s really intense,” sophomore Seth Horton said. “ Like [Coach] Urbach says, it’s a day that we will outwork everybody in the country, in high school and there is no one that will outwork us in the state or anybody. So we are getting better that day,”

Panther wrestlers believe they are, in fact, out-performing all other high school wrestling teams when they undergo the physical demands of Seal Day.

“It was intense for sure; it’s a day where you push yourself to the limit,” sophomore Emma Karhu said. “Even though your body wants to quit, you have to stay mentally strong and keep pushing through the pain.”

Seal Day pushes wrestlers to their limits. Through the harsh training and drills, the wrestlers have to be mentally strong in order to finish strong.

“It gets us better,” Horton said. “It gets us mentally stronger so that we are just that much better and more prepared for state.”

Added Karhu: “I’m not sure exactly the reason, but Coach Urbach has been doing it all his coach years, It helps the team get stronger and tougher before regionals and state.”

With state and regionals coming up soon, Seal Day is a prime opportunity for the wrestlers to train hard in order to prepare for state. This intense day is placed towards the end of the season to prepare the wrestlers for the big competitions coming up.

The wrestling team endures many intense and brutal workouts/drills.

“Log carries … and we did a lot of towel pushes this year,” Horton said. “We do a lot of shoulder workouts and stuff. Just basically anything that will get us mentally tougher.”
