As the clouds rolled in on Sunday afternoon, the town of Powell braced for a Cold Presidents’ Day.

Imagine it’s a Sunday evening and you are dreading the Monday that is quickly approaching. You sigh, get in bed, trying to prepare yourself for a miserable day of school. Then it hits you – it’s actually a three day weekend and school is canceled for the holiday.

This recent weekend, Park County School District gave students and staff a day off in honor of President’s Day. Students gave insight to how they spent the extra day off.

“I don’t work on Monday,” sophomore Andrew Jones said. “So if it’s nice enough, I’ll probably head to the golf course or go on a walk.”

Compared to the previous day with temperatures in the 50s, the -27 degree weather did not exactly make for a warm welcome to anyone who ventured outside Monday morning. Needless to say, Jones did not go golfing on Monday.

“It was a pretty good day off,” freshman Catelynn Floy said. “But I definitely wish it wasn’t so cold out.”

Despite having a day off, many students stayed in the cozy confines of their homes. One individual however, spent his Monday making an important decision.

“I decided to get rid of my smartphone,” sophomore Liam Atkinson said. “It’s been affecting my school life and the more I look into it, the more I can see that I’m addicted to it.”

Atkinson decided he isn’t going to spend any time on electronics for the next month and would rather focus on keeping up in and out of school.

Many students despise school on Monday, so when an extra day off arises, some of them celebrate.

“I love having an extra day off,” Jones said. “I love having three day weekends because Mondays suck and having [them off] specifically makes for a much happier Monday.”
